Scott Adams Cartoonist and Dilbert creator Scott Adams grew up in the Catskill Mountains of New York, moved to Northern California in 1979 and received his MBA from UC Berkeley in 1986.

Among the jobs he's held are bank teller (robbed twice at gunpoint), computer programmer, financial analyst, as well as "a number of jobs that defy description but all involve technology and finances."

Scott says that Dilbert is a composite of his co-workers over the years. He started using the character for business presentations and got great responses. A co-worker suggested the name Dilbert, and Dogbert was created so Dilbert would have someone to talk to.

On the advice of a kind cartoonist, Scott bought a book called "1988 Artist Markets" and followed the instructions on how to get syndicated. He drew fifty sample strips and mailed copies to the major cartoon syndicates. United Media called a few weeks later and offered a contract.

Dilbert was launched in 1989 after several months of further developing the strip. From 1989 until 1995, Scott worked a day job at Pacific Bell while doing the Dilbert comic strip mornings, evenings and weekends.

Currently, Dilbert appears in 2,000 newspapers in 56 countries, making it one of the most successful syndicated comic strips in history. Scott has also written four original best-selling books: The Dilbert Principle, Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook, The Dilbert Future, and The Joy of Work. The first two were #1 New York Times Best Sellers. Including strip reprint books, there are 18 Dilbert books with over 10 million copies in print.

The Dilbert website was the first syndicated comic strip to go online in 1995 and is the most widely read syndicated comic on the internet.

Scott's the CEO of Scott Adams Foods, Inc., a company he founded to create and market convenient, tasty food containing 100% of the daily values of vitamins and minerals. The Dilberito -- a frozen vegetarian burrito product -- is in 2,000 food stores and growing. And he's also the co-owner of the successful Stacey's Cafe restaurant in downtown Pleasanton, California.

Scott lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his two cats.
