Alex Trebek

When millions of viewers worldwide think of Jeopardy!, they immediately think of Alex Trebek,
the host who has skillfully guided contestants through the challenging game…and has guided the
series equally well to 17 years of unprecedented success.
Not bad for someone who readily admits that he had no idea the series would become such a big
hit when he first came on board in 1984. As a result of the series' success, Trebek has made
it into record books as host of television's #1-rated quiz show, and has been honored personally
with two Emmy Awards and, recently, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Trebek graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in
philosophy. Interested in a career in broadcast news, he joined the Canadian Broadcasting
Company, Canada's premier network. While there, he specialized in national news and covered
a wide range of special events for CBC's radio and television divisions, earning a reputation
as a broadcaster who maintained his poise and composure in the most difficult settings.
Trebek was first noticed by U.S. viewers when he was named host of the game series, Wizard of Odds.
After several other hosting roles, Trebek was chosen for Jeopardy!.
Now, as he begins his 19th Jeopardy! season in September 2002, Trebek remains
impressed with the series' fast-paced nature and the contestants' sophisticated level
of knowledge. "It continues to be unlike any series on television," he notes.
"The format is an exciting concept that challenges people to think quickly and make
split-second decisions under pressure."
In order to find the best and brightest contestants, Trebek often travels with Jeopardy!'s
scouting team. And, in conjunction with the USO, Trebek visits military bases around the world to
audition prospective participants. In the Summer of 2001, Trebek continued his dedication to the
USO by touring military bases in Korea and Japan. His efforts have been recognized with the group's
Bob Hope Entertainment Award.
Trebek is active with a number of other educational organizations and charities. A favorite role
of his is host of the annual National Geography Bee in the U.S. and Canada. He is on the boards
of the National Geographic Society Education Foundation and the National Advisory Council for the
Literary Volunteers of America. Active with the World Vision charitable organization, he has
traveled to many Third World countries with World Vision projects, taping reports on the group's
efforts on behalf of children around the world.
Trebek owns and manages Creston Farms in central California, which breeds, trains and provides
state-of-the-art care for thoroughbreds. He and his wife, Jean, and their two children, Emily
and Matthew, live in Studio City, California.
